To be fair, Cashman is in the first year of a new program. He's learning, his kids are learning. If they went out to get a relatively big name coach like Cashman, they've got to give him a little bit of time to build. Couple that with Princeton, which is a well-coached team that I believe is heading in the right direction. I wouldn't want to face them in the ECAC playoffs.

Casey has no such excuse. He's been here for a long time and while the rotating assistants doesn't help for continuity, it's clear the head guy has lost his team.

I agree with the idea that whoever runs the power play should be removed from hockey coaching. I just watched Notre Dame have a 5 minute major against Michigan State and it was truly the antithesis of Clarkson's major last night. They carried the puck into the zone like they were in charge. There was always someone in a shooting position, and most importantly there was always someone causing traffic in front of St. Cyr. Not a single time during the major were all 5 ND players on one side of the ice.

Somebody close to the team said that Jones put the PP lines together, but nobody actually worked with them on it. Poor coaching right there.

      • Up 2-1 after 1. Martino & Schmidt-Svejstrup with the goals.

        • Much better game tonight in a 6-2 win. Campbell had a killer night with a point on almost every goal. Big weekend upcoming with Princeton & Qpac visiting Potsdam for COGO.

If you believe that I have some oceanfront property to sell you in Arizona.

Cashman is in year three, one of which was a covid year. Similarly to when Casey started, Reid took over essentially nothing to work with. It’s the reason Gaudet left. He knew the recruit classes ahead were bad and bolted. Reid will be fine.

I’ll take heat for this but I think the coaching staff is owed a little bit of credit for being able to refocus the team and go out and beat Brown. It’s not easy to get out of a funk.

I'm not saying that he's quit mentally or maybe he's still hurt, but there's a lot of progress that he needs to make to get to the next level. What is abundantly clear is that this team has quit as a whole and there's no accountability in the locker room.
Maybe he hasn’t proved he’s strong enough to play in the AHL, but it’s borderline insane to say he hasn’t proved he’s strong enough to play at the D-1 level.. He’s 2nd in the entire ECAC in assists and top 5 in the ECAC in points. He’s averaging over a point per game and I firmly believe he would be at 40+ points if he didn’t play on such a stagnant offensive team. His skating and puck handling are a cut above most players in the league. And I don’t know what his deal is with hitting the post, I wish they kept stats for that. That kid has hit the post or the crossbar in these last 2 seasons more then anyone I’ve ever seen in my life. He could have 10-15 more goals to his name.

I think he'll develop into a stronger player as he grows. The talent is surely there. I just don't think he's got the strength to be a top flight finisher yet. Your assessment of the stagnant offense is also spot on, as it doesn't help him to create space and work. I just don't think he's there yet physically.

There were some comments discounting that nobody worked with the PP. The stats would indicate that if someone was or is, they must be reading their notebook upside down. Things are all messed up.

The PowerPlay Number +/- (Power plays for vs power plays against) is at -10 right now, 4th worst year under CJ and his 9th negative season of his 12 he's been given...one of the most telling stats in hockey. A team giving up PPs vs earning them is indicative of players falling behind their opponent, struggling to delay, impede or break down a scoring chance. It might also be connected to team speed and strength, which the University spent buko $$$ in placing a new facade strength and conditioning area on the arena. I guess we're not reaping what was sown.

In terms of actual PP goals for/against, we are presently at -5, (11th worst season under CJ). In terms of scoring multiple goals or even one goal on 5-minute majors, I'm sure we are way down in that one, too, but it is a stat I've never tracked. A team goes as their PP goes and 9 out of 12 seasons in the present coaches tenure, we're negative. Not good.

Meanwhile, since the ASU weekend, our shooting percentage is down 0.5% while opponents is up 0.5% and the opponents percentage at 10.2% is now the second worst in the 12 seasons - only better than the 9-20-7 '12-'13 season. Our defenseman had 8 goals in the first 12 games this year and in the last 16 have only hit the back of the net 4 times. That is indicative of either the forward play not feeding good opportunities or our defenseman NOT being in a position to shoot when they get the puck. With the size of the goalie equipment in modern hockey, defensemen need to shoot quickly once the puck arrives and not give the goalie time to reset and find the puck through the players in front. We're simply not seeing enough of that fast shooting now. Last year, there were only 2 players with individual +/- that were negative...this year that is now at 11, half the team (excluding Buhr who departed).

Those shooting percentages may not seem like that big a deal but last year's team had a shooting percentage of 11.7% while this year it sits at 10.5%, while opponents last year was 8.9% and this year it is now 10.2%. That is more than a 2 goal swing in every 100 shots and that is a lot in D-I college hockey...about a goal a game swing.

Last year's team dominated at home with a 14-2-2 record while this year they've struggled with a 6-5-2 record with three of the teams ahead of them in the standings still to enter Cheel. People coming to Cheel want to see good competition and wins, and sadly, with the change in people's habits from Covid-19, and despite a great return season last year, the crowds and alumni simply have not been coming back in droves. I can't speak for the rest of the alumn, but I personally have changed plans twice this year and not made the Lake Effect drive to get to P-dam to experience lack-luster hockey. Loses at home to Mercyhurst (#52 in Pairwise), Union (#40), Brown (#45) & Yale (#55) in the 1st half, tarnished that desire, as I'm sure it did for many northcountry residents who can save a handfull of bucks in this inflationary time.

I can only hope that Cogo becomes an ignition to get this team back on track.

                    • I have been going to see Tech play hockey once a year for over 20 years a 5 hour drive from my home south of Rochester. This season I saw the Union game Tech lost . I can not say I was happy with the way Tech played. It seemed to me Tech was out worked and out hustled But what do I know only having watched hockey since 1954 ( Hockey Night in Canada)

                        • Quinnipiac and Clarkson are scoreless through 1 period. Neither team has really shown up. Haider has made very good saves when he's had to.

                          • Down 1-0 after 2 periods. Quinnipiac played the entire period in our end, Clarkson isn't generating any offense whatsoever. Haider gave up a costly rebound on their goal.

                            • Clarkson falls 3-0 to Quinnipiac. Wasn't expecting us to win but was expecting a better effort. 15 total shots on net. 15. Just no offense whatsoever. Haider showed his strengths but needs the team to show up. Was good to see the band alums back this weekend. Princeton tomorrow night.

                              • Expecting a team that has given up on its coach and itself to show up against the Forum team in the country is probably expecting a bit too much. This team is the Union of the 90's; beat in their heads before they even step on the ice. At least those Union teams weren't full of highly recruited talent that doesn't show up night in and night out.
